Covid boost as Cheshire Fire staff team up with NHS colleagues at vaccination sites

The county’s newest vaccination sites have received a shot in the arm from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service with firefighters and support staff joining NHS colleagues to administer thousands of Covid-19 vaccinations.
Two large sites at Chester Racecourse and Alderley Park opened last week, massively boosting the fight in Cheshire to get our communities protected against the Covid-19 virus as soon as possible.
And in a bid to maximise capacity at the sites, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has provided more than 100 staff who have been trained by NHS colleagues to administer the vaccination, as well as assist with other administrative and support duties.
The fire service personnel are working vaccination shifts around their existing workloads where possible and, in some cases, are volunteering their own time outside of working hours.

Chester Fire Station rebuild complete as firefighters and staff move back in

Firefighters and staff have moved into a state-of-the art fire station that will serve the city of Chester and its residents for years to come.
Work began on the new building around 15 months ago, to replace the former ageing station on St Anne Street. Despite the prospect of building a new fire station during the Covid-19 pandemic, contractor ISG rose the challenge and have now handed over the keys to the new station.
It boasts modern training facilities such as a new training tower, breathing apparatus building and road traffic collision training area, and is generally a better working environment for all staff based there.
It’s also more cost-effective to run and maintain, has improved accessibility, and houses improved community facilities, meaning that Chester’s new fire station will be serving the community in more ways than one.

Sprinkler quickly extinguishes fire at Cheshire nursing home

Chief Fire Officers are praising nursing home owners in Mobberley for their diligence in fitting a sprinkler system which activated when a fire broke out, immediately extinguishing the flames at source.
The fire occurred just after 5.30pm on January 30 and involved a bedroom at Sunrise of Mobberley, Barclay Park, on Hall Lane. Two fire engines from Cheshire and one from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were sent to the scene after an automatic fire alarm sounded, alerting them to the incident.
On arrival crews found everyone in the building was accounted for and that the automatic fire alarm system had raised the alarm and a sprinkler system had also activated and extinguished the flames.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus checked the room and damped down the affected area as a precaution. They praised the care home owners for the fitting of the sprinkler system, which did its job by extinguishing the flames at source.

National campaign to recruit on-call firefighters is an opportunity for those who need more

Paid on-call firefighters are being sought as part of this year’s national on-call recruitment campaign.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) is supporting a campaign led by the National Fire Chiefs Council encouraging people step forward and explore the opportunities the fire and rescue service can offer people who have a passion for working in and helping their local community by becoming paid on-call firefighters.
The ‘Need More’ on-call fire campaign is in its third year and runs from 1 - 7 March. The campaign aims to highlight opportunities which are open to people from all walks of life. The campaign is supported by a national website - www.oncallfire.uk - which allows people to find out more about on-call roles and get in touch with CFRS at any time of the year.
