Pressure on Green Belt quadruples since 2013 despite soaring appreciation of green space, says CPRE

•    Local plans for housing on the Green Belt have quadrupled in the past eight years according to new research from CPRE, the countryside charity
•    Access to countryside and green spaces has never been more important as new poll reveals two thirds of adults think protecting and enhancing green spaces should be a higher priority after lockdown

Despite a surge in demand for time in green space, the Green Belt – the countryside next door for 30 million people - is facing extreme and sustained pressure, according to new research from CPRE, the countryside charity. The annual State of Greenbelt 2021 report reveals there are currently 0.25 million (257,944) homes proposed to be built on land removed from the Green Belt – over four times as many (475% increase) as in 2013. With only one in ten considered affordable, these new homes will do little to tackle the affordable housing crisis.
This pressure is only set to increase under damaging changes to the planning system currently being considered by the government – the analysis reveals the new formula to determine housing supply proposed by the government could lead to at least a 35% increase in housing on the Green Belt. The report highlights a number of local case studies where increased pressure on Green Belts is leading to the loss of valuable open land for local communities.
This huge loss of countryside near where people live is in direct contradiction to overwhelming demand for access to quality time in green space and nature. A new poll, conducted by Opinium on behalf of CPRE, shows a surge in appreciation for local green spaces since the first lockdown, much of which are located in our Green Belts, and found that:
•    Over two thirds (67%) of adults think protecting and enhancing green spaces should be a higher priority after lockdown;
•    Nearly half (46%) reported visiting green spaces more since the start of lockdown – a dramatic 11 percentage point increase since April 2020;
•    59% reported they are more aware of the importance of these local green spaces for our mental health and wellbeing since lockdown.
Commenting on the findings, Crispin Truman, chief executive of CPRE, the countryside charity, said:
‘Local countryside and green spaces have been a lifeline through lockdown. Our poll shows massive public support for protecting these places - their importance for our mental health and wellbeing is undeniable. So, to see the growing level of threat faced by the Green Belt, the countryside next door for millions of people living in our towns and cities, is extremely worrying.
‘The government can and must act to stop the loss of Green Belt and ensure greater access to nature and green space is at the heart of our planning system. This can be done by making best use of land that’s been built on previously before even considering development on the Green Belt. The public is crying out for more access to nature, green space and countryside – it’s time ministers realised this and put people and nature at the heart of their changes to the planning system.’
Despite evidence that there is already enough space on previously used land (known as brownfield) and other land already granted planning permission for the government to reach its housing targets for the duration of this parliament, the upcoming changes to planning look set to further increase pressure on the Green Belt. The report lays out the consequences of this approach as only 10% of the developments planned for Green Belt land between 2015 and 2020 are considered to be affordable. On this trajectory, we risk losing ever more Green Belt while having no impact on the housing crisis and providing homes local communities are able to afford.
To make sure we protect and enhance the Green Belt while allowing for the genuinely affordable new homes that are sorely needed, CPRE is urging the government to put people and nature at the heart of the forthcoming Planning Bill.

Welcome to the February edition of the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service e-Newsletter.

Covid boost as Cheshire Fire staff team up with NHS colleagues at vaccination sites

The county’s newest vaccination sites have received a shot in the arm from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service with firefighters and support staff joining NHS colleagues to administer thousands of Covid-19 vaccinations.
Two large sites at Chester Racecourse and Alderley Park opened last week, massively boosting the fight in Cheshire to get our communities protected against the Covid-19 virus as soon as possible.
And in a bid to maximise capacity at the sites, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has provided more than 100 staff who have been trained by NHS colleagues to administer the vaccination, as well as assist with other administrative and support duties.
The fire service personnel are working vaccination shifts around their existing workloads where possible and, in some cases, are volunteering their own time outside of working hours.

Chester Fire Station rebuild complete as firefighters and staff move back in

Firefighters and staff have moved into a state-of-the art fire station that will serve the city of Chester and its residents for years to come.
Work began on the new building around 15 months ago, to replace the former ageing station on St Anne Street. Despite the prospect of building a new fire station during the Covid-19 pandemic, contractor ISG rose the challenge and have now handed over the keys to the new station.
It boasts modern training facilities such as a new training tower, breathing apparatus building and road traffic collision training area, and is generally a better working environment for all staff based there.
It’s also more cost-effective to run and maintain, has improved accessibility, and houses improved community facilities, meaning that Chester’s new fire station will be serving the community in more ways than one.

Sprinkler quickly extinguishes fire at Cheshire nursing home

Chief Fire Officers are praising nursing home owners in Mobberley for their diligence in fitting a sprinkler system which activated when a fire broke out, immediately extinguishing the flames at source.
The fire occurred just after 5.30pm on January 30 and involved a bedroom at Sunrise of Mobberley, Barclay Park, on Hall Lane. Two fire engines from Cheshire and one from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were sent to the scene after an automatic fire alarm sounded, alerting them to the incident.
On arrival crews found everyone in the building was accounted for and that the automatic fire alarm system had raised the alarm and a sprinkler system had also activated and extinguished the flames.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus checked the room and damped down the affected area as a precaution. They praised the care home owners for the fitting of the sprinkler system, which did its job by extinguishing the flames at source.

National campaign to recruit on-call firefighters is an opportunity for those who need more

Paid on-call firefighters are being sought as part of this year’s national on-call recruitment campaign.

The ‘Need More’ on-call fire campaign is in its third year and runs from 1 - 7 March. The campaign aims to highlight opportunities which are open to people from all walks of life. The campaign is supported by a national website - www.oncallfire.uk - which allows people to find out more about on-call roles and get in touch with CFRS at any time of the year.

Do Not Use Your Mobile Whilst Driving

Do Not Use Your Mobile Whilst Driving

Good Morning.
It’s a well-known fact that using a mobile phone while driving is one of the main contributory factors in a fatal collision. We will be out looking for anyone taking a call, texting or scrolling through their phone while driving.
Drivers who use mobile phones behind the wheel are four times more likely to be involved in a collision. Leave your phone well out of sight. It’s not worth dying for.
The majority, if not all, road users know that it is against the law to use their mobile phone while driving, yet some still decide to do it anyway. Many people even try and hide it down by their laps in a bid to avoid being caught. There is no excuse.
If caught using your mobile phone while driving, you will face the prospect of a £200 fine and six penalty points on your licence and, if you’re a new driver, you could lose your licence. That call/text/post on social media is not worth dying for.
If you think you could be tempted to look at your mobile phone, then leave it well out of reach. That call/text/post on social media is not worth dying for.

Residents Urged To Remain Vigilant Following Increase In Catalytic Converter Thefts

Police are urging residents to remain vigilant following an increase in in the number of catalytic converter thefts across the county.
Over the past week officers have received at least nine reports of catalytic converter thefts in Northwich, Middlewich, Warrington, Holmes Chapel and Handforth.
The offenders have targeted a number of vehicles including Honda Jazz, Toyota Auris, Honda Accord and Toyota Corolla.
Inspector Anton Sullivan, of Cheshire Constabulary’s Roads and Crime Unit, added: “Catalytic converter thefts are on the rise across the country, with offenders predominantly targeting hybrid vehicles.
“I would like to reassure residents that we are doing all we can to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
“At this time our enquiries in relation to these recent incidents remain ongoing and we are keeping an open mind as to whether they are linked.
“Car owners can also play a significant role in tackling catalytic converter thefts by being vigilant, reviewing any security measures they have in place and calling the police on 101 as soon as possible if they see anyone removing catalytic converters or acting suspiciously in car parks, on driveways or anywhere else where vehicles are left.
“In addition, we urge scrap metal dealers to be mindful if they are ever offered catalytic converters or exhaust systems and to contact us if they suspect that they could have been stolen.”
Cheshire Constabulary’s tips on how motorists can reduce their chances of becoming a victim are:

  • If possible, park your car in a garage
  • If your car is at high risk, consider marking the metal shell of the converter with a unique mark, so that if it is stolen it will be easier to trace back to your vehicle
  • If your catalytic converter is bolted on, the bolts can be welded shut - this would not stop a determined thief but would slow them down
  • Giving some consideration to the way your car is parked could reduce the chances of your catalytic converter being stolen - high and low clearance vehicles being parked close together make it more difficult for a thief to gain access to converters
  • Good quality lighting will improve natural surveillance and make a thief less likely to be able to remove a catalytic converter without being seen
  • Leaving your car in an area covered by CCTV may also deter thieves - CCTV systems should be well signed.
Anyone with any information or footage regarding catalytic converter thefts in Cheshire is asked to call 101, give the details via https://www.cheshire.police.uk/ro/report or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.Email tracking gif
