Cheshire East Council continues to move forward with plans for Middlewich Eastern Bypass

Proposals for a bypass at Middlewich have moved a step closer after Cheshire East Council put all the necessary legal measures in place for the scheme to progress towards construction, and approved a construction contractor.

Councillor Don Stockton, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for environment, said: “It has been a long-held ambition of Cheshire East Council and Middlewich residents to see a bypass built that relieves traffic congestion in the town centre.

“We have been listening and responding to concerns from the Middlewich community around the need for this bypass and our intense programme of works to achieve it is moving forward quickly.

“Middlewich is identified in our Local Plan as a key service centre and the construction of this bypass supports the economic growth agenda for the local area, delivering additional jobs and houses in Middlewich, alongside relieving traffic congestion.

“This decision means that we can keep the project moving in the right direction.”

A planning application for the bypass has been submitted by the council with a target planning decision date of March 2019. Construction of the bypass aims to start in summer 2020, with the road open to traffic by winter 2021.

The current estimate for the cost of the scheme is £58m.
