Cheshire East helps fund new CCTV crackdown in Crewe

Cheshire East Council has helped fund the placing of CCTV in an anti-social behaviour hotspot in Crewe.

The council awarded £4,000 to the scheme to install a camera on Sandon Street. This matched £4,000 given to Crewe Town Council for the project from the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire’s safer communities’ fund.

The camera has been installed mid-way along Sandon Street in a bid to reduce crime, anti-social behaviour and fly tipping in the area. It covers the whole of Sandon Street and also provides a view up and down Chester Street and Crewe Street, which are not presently covered by CCTV.

Councillor Janet Clowes, Cheshire East Council cabinet member with responsibility for safer communities, said: “We continue to work closely with local police, the PCC and Crewe Town Council to reduce anti-social behaviour in the town. Together we are determined to crack down on anti-social behaviour and the new CCTV camera will help tackle a persistent problem area.

“Sadly, some people think they are above the law and continue to disturb the local community with their behaviour. Cheshire East’s decision to help fund this scheme, along with our partners, signals our commitment to tackling crime and rooting out anti-social behaviour of any kind, including fly-tipping, graffiti and vandalism.”

Councillor Benn Minshall, deputy leader of Crewe Town Council, said: “Sandon Street itself is a back alley and is known to be a preferred ‘escape’ route from the town centre by those up to no good. And due to its location, it’s also prone to be used as a ‘dumping ground’ for waste.

“Following a review, we established that installing CCTV was the best way forward to address the issues and reduce demand on the resources of councils and local police.

“We welcome the commissioner’s commitment to CCTV and for recognising the positive effects it can have on community safety. We are thankful to Police and Crime Commissioner David Keane and Cheshire East Council for granting the funds to make the installation of the camera possible, to make our town centre safer.”

PCC David Keane said: “Having visited Sandon Street myself, it’s clear to see how such an isolated area is benefitting from extra security measures. I’m pleased that my safer communities fund could support this project.

“High-quality CCTV plays a major role in helping to keep people safe. It provides a valuable resource for the police to investigate crime and can take the strain off overstretched police resources by acting as a deterrent to criminals.

“It also gives reassurance to local communities, particularly to both members of the public and police officers working in isolated areas in the evening and night-time economy.”
