GENERAL ELECTION
8th June 2017
As you will have heard, the Prime Minister, Theresa May, recently and reluctantly came to the conclusion that a General Election is necessary to establish a strong Government that will give the country stability and certainty for a full five years, and not just up to the point at which we leave the European Union.
Her motion, to trigger this, was supported by an overwhelming majority in the House of Commons—by 522 votes to 13—and this result means that, on Thursday 8th June 2017, the UK will be voting in a General Election.
Local service continues

BUT MY LOCAL SERVICE CONTINUES
As many of you have contacted me with a concern previously, I wanted to let you know that Parliament will be dissolved on 3rd May, and from that date there will be no MPs until the General Election on 8th June.
While I will not be a Member of Parliament between these dates, I want to let you know that I will still be here working hard for Crewe and Nantwich, and doing all I can to help local people with any problem or concern that they may have.
I am, of course, contesting the election, and I am standing on my proud record of achievements since being elected in 2008.
In the last 9 years I have held over 250 advice surgeries in venues all over the constituency, in pubs, supermarkets, village halls, cafes, church halls and even a fire station!
Over 17,000 constituents have written to me, visited me or called into my office to ask for help or advice. I have written over 54,000 casework letters alone. And I have visited numerous charities, schools and businesses. Most importantly I have been able to support thousands of local families with big and not so big problems when they came to me for help.
THE FUTURE FOR CREWE AND NANTWICH
Local business is thriving. Local unemployment is down, and local youth employment is up. After a lot of hard work, High Speed 2 is becoming a reality, and I’m now throwing my all into making the most of the opportunity it presents for Crewe: not just in terms of rail services and the station, but real transformation for local people, business and amenities.
I want to make our part of South Cheshire an area that oozes aspiration, so that it attracts the brightest and the best to live here, helping us to build on our success.
But there will always be challenges. We can never be complacent. For example, I’ve spent a lot of time in a recent national consultation lobbying the Schools Minister, the Education Secretary, and now even the Prime Minister to make sure that our local schools get their fair share of education funding.
It’s at times like this that being able to speak up in the corridors of power can really make a difference for local families.
So, a strong voice in Government and a strong voice in Crewe and Nantwich. That’s what I’ve been providing. And that’s what I will continue to provide, if you let me.
THE FUTURE FOR THE UK
The UK faces a number of challenges in the coming years, and I think it is fair that the British people have their say ahead of the upcoming negotiations on our withdrawal from the EU. I believe a Conservative administration, led by Theresa May, will provide the strong and stable leadership we need to get the job done and negotiate the best possible deal for the UK.
There are, still, some unknowns, but one thing is certain: we need a united Westminster, where MPs and parties work together to build a better, more prosperous post-Brexit Britain.
This General Election, though, is not only about Brexit. It is about the management of the economy and the competence – or otherwise – of the opposition parties to run the nation.
Under Conservative stewardship, since 2010, the UK has seen unemployment fall to near-record lows; wages and incomes rise, via tax cuts and the the introduction of a National Living Wage; record investment go into our NHS; increased support for STEM subjects, as well as the creation of over 3 million new apprenticeships for young people; our country's cash deficit fall, by over £100bn; new infrastructure projects, such as HS2, generate local growth and inward investment; and, significantly, an economy which has developed and defied expectation, since the 2008 crash, and that is now more resilient to shocks.
YOUR VOTE
It has been a pleasure to serve not just as your MP, but as Minister of State for Vulnerable Children and Families in this Government, and I hope you will consider giving me, and the Conservatives, a strong mandate to finish the job.
I looking forward to seeing you in the coming weeks!
Edward Timpson MP
Member of Parliament for Crewe and Nantwich

2017 Virgin London Marathon
Just over a week ago I completed the London Marathon in support of Muscular Dystrophy UK and the Army Benevolent Fund – The Soldiers' Charity.
The London Marathon is always extremely physically and mentally challenging, and this year was no different. The time I had to train this year was much more limited than it had been in the past, so I was very happy with my finish time of 3 hours 57 minutes.
This year, as many of you will know, I ran on a 'joint ticket' with fellow Cheshire MP, Graham Evans, for Muscular Dystrophy UK and the Army Benevolent Fund – The Soldiers' Charity - and I am delighted to report that our efforts have, so far, raised over £3,300!
Muscular Dystrophy UK (previously known as the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign) is a charity that brings together individuals, families and professionals to beat muscle-wasting conditions. Since 1959, it has been leading the fight against muscle-wasting conditions, by:
- supporting high quality research to find effective treatments and cures and won’t stop until we have found them for all muscle-wasting conditions;
- leading the drive to get faster access to emerging treatment for families in the UK;
- ensuring everyone has the specialist NHS care and support they need – the right help at the right time, wherever they live;
- and by providing a range of services and resources to help people live as independently as possible
While ABF - The Soldiers’ Charity supports soldiers and veterans from the British Army, and their immediate families, in times of need. It makes grants to individuals through Regiments and Corps, and supports a wide range of specialist charities that sustain the British Army ‘family’, both at home and around the world.
Although we are now in the post-race period, there is still time to support these two charities via our VirginMoneyGiving webpage: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/GrahamEvansMPandEdwardTimpsonMP
Thank you!
Recently, I...
- Ran my thirteenth London Marathon, in a time of 3hrs 57mins, for Muscular Dystrophy UK and the Army Benevolent Fund – The Soldiers' Charity;
- Made representations to the Prime Minister, Theresa May, about the Department for Education's proposed 'National Funding Formula' for schools;
- Discussed the Government's plans for Crewe, as part of HS2 Phase 2b, with the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling;
- Met staff at Crewe Engineering & Design UTC, and received a tour of the new development;
- Joined Wistaston Scout Leader John Bennett for a guided visit of the Group's new building and facilities;
- Opened the 2017 'Home Show' in Nantwich;
- Met with constituents, and heard their views ahead of the General Election campaign, at organised street stalls in Nantwich and Crewe town centres;
- Held my regular advice surgeries in Crewe and in Nantwich.
Last week I had a productive meeting with the Prime Minister, Theresa May, on the Government's commitment to Crewe, as part of HS2-Phase 2b, and the Department for Education's proposed 'National Funding Formula'.
Thanks to everyone who stopped for a chat in Crewe and in Nantwich on Saturday. If you'd like to get in touch or support me during the General Election campaign, visit: https://www.edwardtimpson.com/myfeedback
The Metropolitan Police Federation are raising money for the family of PC Keith Palmer, the Police Officer who tragically gave his life on 22 March as he guarded the Palace of Westminster from what is believed to have been a terrorist attack.
Every day, all over London and the rest of the UK, Police Officers risk their lives to protect and defend us - in the wake of this tragedy our thoughts are with Keith’s family and all the people who are injured have lost their lives.

Unemployment falls to 10-year low as job vacancies soar
Crewe Guardian:
UK unemployment has fallen to its lowest in a decade as a record number of job vacancies are on offer, new figures show.

Crewe & Nantwich nurseries receive funding boost
Nantwich News:
Two nurseries near Nantwich are among five to share more than £745,000 of government funding to boost free nursery places.
Rope Green Farm Day Nursery in Willaston, and Bramley Hedge Day Nursery in Bunbury, are to benefit from the capital funding.
It will support delivery of 30 hours of free childcare for working parents of three and four-year-olds.
They initially missed out, when successful bids to the Education Funding Agency were announced in January, but along with Mossley Pre-school in Congleton; St Michael’s Academy Nursery in Crewe, and High Hopes Nursery in Gawsworth, they will be able to expand.
Crewe & Nantwich Conservatives welcome General Election
Nantwich News:
Crewe and Nantwich Conservatives have welcomed the news of a General Election, a spokesman for MP Edward Timpson has said.
Mr Timpson, who has been MP for Crewe and Nantwich since 2008, believes now is the right time for the election.
“Britain needs certainty, stability and strong leadership following the EU referendum. Crewe and Nantwich are no exception to that,” said a spokesman for the Conservative MP.
“As our Prime Minister Theresa May has said, the country is coming together, but Westminster is not.
“Supporters of Jeremy Corbyn are undermining our country’s position.
“The only way to guarantee certainty and security for local families and jobs is to hold this election and to vote Conservative."
