Councillor Ainsley Arnold, cabinet member for housing and planning, said: “Shortly after midnight last night, Cheshire East Council was made aware of a fire at an address in Nelson Street, Crewe.
“Fortunately, nobody was hurt and the council is now reviewing appropriate housing arrangements for the 14 people who were affected by last night’s incident, when 28 houses were evacuated.”
The house where the fire happened was empty but the houses either side could not be re-occupied after the evacuation.
After the incident, a rest centre was set up at Ruskin Community High School, where colleagues from Cheshire East Council’s social care and emergency planning team, the Salvation Army, the Rotary Club and the Red Cross helped to provide support to 14 people. The headteacher and a caretaker from the school also attended to support.
The rest centre was closed at 5.30am today. Cheshire East Council is currently working with everyone directly affected by last night’s incident to ensure appropriate housing is secured for them.
