Crewe Central residents have decided who will receive £20,000 of Commissioner’s funds

The twelve projects with the highest number of votes by the community of Crewe Central were announced at an event held last night at the Jubilee Centre by Cheshire’s Police & Crime Commissioner John Dwyer.

He said on the night: “I am so pleased that this community has brought forward some really good ideas which will benefit not only them but the wider community in Crewe. I am therefore, delighted to give them support in this tangible way.  I am looking forwards to visiting the recipients of the funds, seeing the projects in action and hearing about the benefits they have realised.“

164 people voted for the 22 projects put forwards by the community to improve the area and create opportunities for local people.

This project could not have happened without the support of partners including Cheshire East Council, The Wishing Well project, Motherwell CIC and local businesses but most of all it happened because the residents of Crewe Central involved.

The successful winners were:--

Make Do & Mend Club

£620 will fund items required to teach parents/carers to alter and mend a variety of clothing, basic knowledge of a sewing machine, build and share skills within the group and up-skill pupils of Beechwood Primary School to be able to create a variety of items.

BFit Health & Wellbeing Improvements

£2,000 will pay for a preventative bespoke Health & Wellbeing programme designed to offer bite size workshops around key health topics. Each visit will consist of an informative 30 minute session, health assessments and on-going support.

Family Bike Maintenance & Safety

£1,670 will fund a basic cycle maintenance course for families, focussing on safety and cost-effectiveness.

Senior’s Social Day

£1,320 will fund two days for the senior population to get together to engage in seasonal craft activities, try scrapbooking, storytelling and play games i.e. dominoes, cards, puzzles. Lunch and refreshments will be served, and other organisations can attend.

All Change @ Crewe Central 2

£2,000 will be used to develop a Crewe Central Market that will provide healthy food and affordable, quality clothing. Using an empty shop or open air venue the project will open once a month from November to April.

Memory China & Accessories

£1,430 will facilitate a new Café of Memories at Barnies Community Hub to help those older/retired residents, people with dementia and their families and carers to come and join in and remember how we used to live, work and enjoy ourselves in times past.

Learning Café

£1,790 will provide regular live cooking demonstrations within the community hub, showing people how to prepare recipes. A qualified volunteer chef will prepare, cook and talk through the process answering questions. Learners can then purchase lunch.

Growing Together for a Healthier Community

£2,000 will allow the project to work in the local community to encourage people to grow produce together using vacant tubs and derelict spaces within Crewe Central and use Jubilee House’s cooking facilities to teach people about how to make basic nutritious meals.

Barnies Community Garden Disabled Greenhouse & Furniture

£1,810 will purchase an easily accessible greenhouse and orbit round garden tables and benches and garden hand tools to provide new activities for participants, encouraging new people to visit and join in with the gardening activities.

Mum’s the Word

£1,510 will be used for an intergenerational project where young mums meet with residents to produce an exhibition about “The changing roles of mums in Crewe”.

The exhibition will then go on tour to schools, supported housing, etc.

Youth Enterprise Project- Well Fit!

£1,995 will be used for people that need extra support e.g. people with autism, to improve their health and fitness by learning to cook and develop a fitness programme for all. They will be helped to take care of the money and write the reports.

Sparkle & Shine

£1,483 will provide wellbeing days to residents in Crewe Central where a variety of therapies, such as massages and reflexology, will be offered at a reduced price. The days will provide a feel good factor and stress management strategies.
