Council in ward-by-ward energy push as bill payers miss out on £2.2bn nationally

Cheshire East Council is embarking on a concerted effort to help residents save money on their fuel bills.

The Council’s Fairerpower team are doing a ward-by-ward marketing push over the coming months as new data reveals that a staggering £2.2bn worth of energy savings are available to UK households if they only switch suppliers.

The information released by the Government found that an estimated 11 million households could make significant savings, yet only six per cent realised they could save as much as £200. (I would insert a link to the report in the footnotes)

The good news though, is that  you could save yourself around £258 (see note 1) if you pay monthly, or as much as £75 (see note 2) if you are on a pay as you go (PAYG) meter, by switching to Fairerpower. It takes only ten minutes to check.

Fairerpower is an energy initiative launched by the Council in March of this year in partnership with award-winning OVO Energy to give residents access to excellent customer service and low tariffs. It’s already attracted over 3,500 customers from across Cheshire East, who have collectively saved more than £700,000.

New Fairerpower customer, Joanne Cartledge of Middlewich, recently switched her fuel supply from NPower to Fairerpower saving a massive £588 per annum.

Joanne said: “I had heard from other people how much money they were saving with Fairerpower and thought I would get a quote. I like the fact that I don’t have to continually look to change tariffs because with Fairerpower they have been consistently lower than the big six energy companies. I also like that I have extra money each month which I can spend on my family. My boys are footballing mad so we can go to more games.”

Councillor Rod Menlove, chairman of Cheshire East Energy Ltd, said: “The figures from the Government’s study are worrying. Now is the ideal time for people to spend just 10 minutes to get a quote from Fairerpower and check whether they could save themselves a lot of money.  Then larger than average energy bills over the winter will then be less of a worry.

“Cheshire East Council does not believe people should be forced to choose between heating and eating.

“For too long, many residents have been paying more for their energy than they should. With Fairerpower, customers can be sure they are getting a much fairer price for their energy. So far, we’ve found that 60 per cent of Fairerpower’s customers had never switched before, so you can’t say fairer than that.”

Fairerpower pay monthly customers get:

● Potential average savings of £258 a year (see note 1);

● Ability to fix contracts for 12 months;

● No exit fees;

● Three per cent interest reward paid on all credit balances up to £1,000 (see note 3); and

● Award-winning customer service

Fairerpower PAYG customers get:

● Potential average savings of £75 a year (see note 2);

● Free energy monitor that shows credit and usage;

● Smart meter as standard; and

● Award-winning customer service

Cheshire East Council is also in discussions with housing associations to extend the benefits of fairer, competitively priced energy to even more residents.
