Cheshire East Council has given more than £14,000 to boost community projects in Alsager.
Cheshire East Council Deputy Leader Councillor David Brown presented the grant cheque for £14,200 during a visit to Christ Church, Alsager.
The money is being used to buy new computer equipment and support community initiatives for people across all age groups, which operate out of the thriving community church – including youth clubs, pensioner coffee morning gatherings and a jobs club.
Cllr Brown, who presented the community ‘give back’ grant cheque at a regular ‘coffee and communion’ event, said: “It was a pleasure to visit the church hall at Christ Church and to get a flavour of the many good things which go on here.
“What a fantastic facility it is! The older generation get together for coffee mornings, there’s an after school club in the afternoons, a weekly youth club and now, with their new computers, they are able to offer a job club too.
“I understand that part of the grant money is being used to buy some much-needed new chairs – as the existing hard plastic ones are 22 years old. So now they can look forward to sitting down comfortably in the very near future.
“Everybody here is so positive and it is great to see the church offering such a broad range of truly valuable facilities for the whole local community.”
Church leadership team member Helen May said: “We’re very grateful to Cheshire East’s ‘give back’ fund for the large sum we’ve been given.
“A large part of it will be spent on acquiring 160 new chairs for the community hall, which provide more comfort for the 800-or-so people who use this hall each week. A lot of these people are elderly and they will particularly benefit from more comfy seats.”
The Rev Toby May, Vicar of Christ Church, added: “We will also use some of the money at the other end of the age spectrum – towards some of the youth activities we do here.
“We have bought an Xbox for our thriving Friday evening youth club, for example, and the money will also help fund some laptops and a secure storage station for our job club.
“We mustn’t forget that, even in a leafy place like Alsager, there are still people who are struggling to find work and some of those have been struggling for a long time.
“As Christians and as a church, we should be helping all people in the community and partnering with Cheshire East in this way will really help these people, who may otherwise go unseen.”
