‘Sign up now for UTC’ young people urged

Prospective students are being urged to express an interest now if they want to study at Crewe’s prestigious University Technical College when it opens its doors in 2015.

The UTC will cater for 14-19 year olds who want to pursue careers in engineering and high skill manufacturing, working with major local employers to develop gold-standard vocational qualifications.

Major local employers like Bentley, Siemens, Network Rail and Rail OSL – the fastest growing rail engineering company in Europe – are already signed-up, ensuring that students receive world-class skills in fields like electronics, engineering and construction, computer-aided design and modelling.

The £10 million UTC will be built on the site of the old Victoria School building on Meredith Street and will initially have spaces for 120 students, although this will eventually rise to 600. The council’s formal funding bid to the Department for Education will be submitted in October.

Cheshire East Council Leader Michael Jones said: “The UTC is taking another step towards reality and now is the time for any young person looking to become an engineer or to work in high-skill manufacturing to get in touch and express an interest in studying there. It’s not binding, but it allows us to get in touch with people when enrolment begins next year as we expect demand for places to be high.”

Cllr Jones added: “The UTC has terrific buy-in from major local employers and will be a unique new bridge between school and work for hundreds of young people locally. It will also help employers grow their own workforces and provide sustainable, high skill jobs for many years to come, ensuring Crewe really does become the engineering centre of the north west.”
