Police warn of dangers of open water swimming

 

Cheshire Police are warning the public about the risks of swimming in the county′s rivers, lakes and reservoirs during the current warm weather.

Assistant Chief Constable Ruth Purdie said: "During the hot weather we are currently having, going for a swim can be a temptation. But any river, canal or lake can hold hidden dangers, such as uneven depths, sudden decreases in temperature, unseen objects and unseen currents."

Police urge parents to reiterate the dangers of swimming in open water to their children and most importantly, emphasise that irresponsible swimming can potentially cost lives.

The warning also extends to man-made locations that are mistakenly perceived as a ‘safer′ option.

In reservoirs, for example, automatic equipment can be concealed under the surface of the water which can begin operating spontaneously. This can in turn create underwater currents and can cause even the strongest of swimmers to get into difficulty very easily.
