MP’s 133rd news bulletin

Edward Timpson MP

Monday 1, April 2013

Welcome ...

Welcome to this my 133rd news bulletin.

Good news: in Crewe and Nantwich, unemployment is falling.  In fact, in the last year the total number of jobseekers has fallen by 8.1 per cent.

Recently I have been visiting thriving local businesses, including Storage Boost, OSL Rail and CNG Services, to name but a few.

But we still have more than 2,000 people actively seeking work.  We're fortunate though, in our area.  The Jobcentre is advertising more than 3,000 jobs within 10 miles of Crewe, which increases to more than 12,000 within 20 miles.

So the jobs are out there.  we just have to match people and their skills to the right jobs.

My second annual jobs fair aims to help with that process.  It's being held on Thursday, June 27, at Crewe Alex, and all are welcome.

But it's not just about recruitment. The jobs fair is also there to help people identify gaps in skills, potential training, and opportunities to boost their CV through volunteering and getting involved in community activities.

I'm also excited that Government funding for infrastructure is helping us grow new jobs and businesses in Crewe and Nantwich, particularly as a result of millions of pounds of investment we are receiving for the Crewe Green link road extension and HS2.

And these won't just be construction jobs.  as well as building the road and railway line, we will also have an expanded railway services industry, with the HS2 depot, opportunities for logistics firms and be able to provide a good home for other businesses that will want to settle around a key transport hub such as Crewe.

A lot of hard work behind the scenes from me and other local leaders in government and industry has paid off. we have done very well in terms of the amount of investment we have secured in the last few years, and we are well positioned for the future.

Since the election, more than one million private-sector jobs have been created. Let's make sure we get our share of the success in Crewe and Nantwich.

Please remember, you can always contact me directly if you have any questions for me.

You can forward the bulletin on to your friends and family, who can sign up themselves by clicking here for my website.

Best wishes,

Edward Timpson
Member of Parliament for Crewe & Nantwich

Locally I have...

  • Held a number of surgeries in Crewe and in Nantwich, and two 'On Your Street' sessions in Wistaston and in Crewe, bringing my surgery to your doorstep.
  • Welcomed the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin MP, to Crewe Station, where he announced £2.7m in funding for the 'Basford West spine road', which will relieve congestion between the A500 and Crewe town centre. The new road will also serve the main High Speed Rail maintenance hub, which will be constructed at Basford sidings.
  • Cut the ribbon at the opening of Good Time Charlie's, a new children's indoor play centre in Crewe.
  • Met, with the Merseyside and Cheshire Neurological Alliance, local people from Crewe and Nantwich who have neurological conditions, to learn more about the issues that face them.
  • Officially launched the Neighbours Network, a volunteer service based in Haslington, with the aim of helping elderly residents stay independent for as long as possible.
  • Visited CNG Services Ltd, on Weston Road in Crewe, where they have just opened the UK's largest Compressed Natural Gas station.  CNG sell biomethane that has been made by the Duchy of Cornwall, and the company has innovative plans to develop bio-gas production for energy supply, right here in Crewe.
  • Spoken with young mothers and nurses at the launch of the Family Nurse Partnership in Cheshire East. Supported by the Children’s Trust, Clinical Commissioning Groups and the local council, the Partnership is a preventative programme for young first time mothers 19 years and under. It offers intensive and structured home visiting, delivered by specially trained nurses from early pregnancy until the child is two.

Edward with the Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP, Transport Minister, and rail campaigner Pete Waterman.

The Minister announced last month £2.7million in Government support for a Basford West spine road, linking the A500 to the Gresty Road corridor, heading towards Crewe town centre, and improving strategic transport links to the M6 and rail service.  The road will also provide critical local infrastructure for the Basford Sidings-based HS2 depot, which is forecast to create around 300 jobs when High Speed Rail comes to Crewe.

Portrait bench marks opening of new Crewe-Nantwich Greenway

Nantwich News

These pictures show the portrait bench which marks the opening of the new Crewe-Nantwich Greenway route.

The route runs from Tipkinder Park in Crewe, around Queens Park and King George V playing fields to the Rising Sun Inn.

Then it feeds west through fields along the A530 Middlewich Road to Barony Park, ending at Beam Street in Nantwich.

It is designed to give pedestrians, wheelchair users and cyclists a traffic-free route between Crewe and Nantwich.

The western section from the Rising Sun Inn to Barony Park has been designed to accommodate horse riders.

A ribbon cutting ceremony by Councillor Peggy Martin (Mayor of Crewe), Councillor George Walton (Mayor of Cheshire East Borough) and Councillor Arthur Moran (Nantwich Town Council) took place at the ‘Portrait Bench’, located by the entrance to Alvaston Hall.

The ceremony was also attended by walkers, runners, cyclists and horse riders.

The Portrait Bench features life-size sheet steel effigies of a Roman Soldier, a Civil War Roundhead and a Railwayman

The route was funded by the Big Lottery Fund, constructed by William Pye Ltd and promoted by Sustrans (sustainable transport charity).

Funding boost for South Cheshire schools

Crewe Chronicle

CREWE and Nantwich MP Edward Timpson has hailed the announcement of an extra £10m toward school funding in South Cheshire.

The Government is to provide more than £4bn to help repair school buildings and tackle a shortage of primary school places.

Cheshire East Council will receive £4,850,889 to create new school places and £6,306,390 to repair school buildings.

The council will also be able to bid for extra funding from the new ‘Targeted Basic Need’ programme to open new schools where places are needed, or to expand existing good and outstanding schools.

Mr Timpson said: "This extra money will be very welcome in Crewe and Nantwich.

"Too many of our schools are in a bad state of repair and many children face being left without a school to go to as a result of the places shortage left by the previous government.

"Despite difficult financial circumstances, it is great news the Government has found extra funds to improve school buildings. The extra places this money will provide will help more parents find the right school for their child."
