Wistaston Jubliee Beacon

A beacon to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee was lit at the top of the St Mary's Church tower in Church Lane, Wistaston at 10.15pm yesterday evening (Monday 4th June) and it burnt for an hour. An estimated one hundred people attended the lighting ceremony. It was a clear night so the beacon would have been visible over a wide area. It formed part of a network of 4,000 beacons across the UK: http://www.diamondjubileebeacons.co.uk . Members of the Wistaston 35th Scout Group - http://www.wistastonscoutgroup.org.uk - helped to lift the beacon into place and were on hand on the night to serve food and drink. The event was organised by the Wistaston Community Council - http://wistastoncommunity.co.uk/ - with help in funding from Cheshire East Council and Wistaston Parish Council. Crewe and Nantwich CVS and Volunteer Bureau coordinated the funds to allow the purchase of the beacon.
