STATEMENT: Potential job losses at BAE Systems, Radway Green, in Crewe.

Leader of Cheshire East Council, Councillor Michael Jones, said: “This is very sad news indeed. Around 75 jobs could potentially go in our Borough.

“I would like to make it clear that I am personally committed to doing all I can to ease this stressful time for our Cheshire East residents and their families.

“This will include rallying the Council’s Redundancy Support Team and the local JobCentre Plus to give advice and help to those residents who are potentially at risk of losing their jobs.

“Cheshire East Council recognises that Radway Green, in Crewe, is a significant employment hub for the Borough, employing some 450 people.

“We are in close contact with the company and the unions to understand the issues surrounding the announcement and we will be working extra hard to mitigate the impact on our residents’ livelihoods by supporting the company and the unions where we can.

“The Council has held strong links with BAE Systems at Radway Green for some time and we know that the company is making a significant £83m investment at the site.

“It is therefore such a shame that, in the current economic climate, jobs are under threat.

“We are assured that all steps are being taken to hold a fair consultation with employees and unions.

“Together we will provide advice on job search, benefits and other issues for affected employees, in order to ensure the impact on individuals and their families, as well as the local economy, is minimised.”
