Roofers given CRASBO

A pair of roofers who pleaded guilty to misleading customers in the Macclesfield area have now been given a Criminal Anti Social Behaviour Order (CRASBO) to help stop them carrying out any similar scams.

Father and son duo Donald James Warner, 50, and James Dean Warner, 29, traded as JW Roofing and Building and carried out work across Cheshire East and Staffordshire.

On February 2, they pleaded guilty to fraud. They were given community orders and ordered to pay compensation and costs.

Cheshire East Council’s consumer protection and investigations team brought the prosecution after receiving several complaints that the pair cold-called residents using false and misleading claims in order to carry out work on their property.

The Council successfully applied for a CRASBO on conviction at Chester Magistrates on March 1.

The order requires both defendants to not:

· Make unsolicited calls at private houses for the purpose of obtaining building work or gardening work;

· Encourage or employ others to engage in the behaviour listed above; and

· Be on or in private houses in order to carry our building or gardening work without the express permission of the owner.

Donald James Warner was given his CRASBO until February 28, 2022 and James Dean Warner has his until February 28, 2017. Both men live on Adams Avenue, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent.

Anyone with concerns about doorstep callers, or who would like to request a Nominated Neighbour pack, should contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.

Councillor Rachel Bailey, Cabinet member with responsibility for safer and stronger communities, said: “The purpose of this CRASBO is to prevent any more Cheshire East residents being conned by these men. Any breach of the order is a criminal offence and carries up to a five-year custodial sentence.

“Fortunately, the large majority of traders across the Borough are reputable and trustworthy. We are part of the national Buy With Confidence Scheme, where accredited businesses undergo strict vetting and background checks.
