IRONWORK STOLEN IN CREWE

More than 50 gully tops have been stolen from the Crewe area.

The thefts were reported to Cheshire Police and Cheshire East Council on Monday, June 28. It is believed they were stolen overnight.

The gully tops were taken from various areas including Henry Street, Peel Street, Capesthorne Road, Morton Road, Richard Moon Street and Westminster Street and Nile Street.

The missing gully gratings pose a serious danger to roads users and pedestrians.

Cheshire East Council is urging local residents to remain vigilant and report any such thefts or anything suspicious via Highways Operations on 0845 002 0666.

Alternatively, such thefts can be reported to Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000 using the incident number 330 (June 28, 2010).

A similar incident occurred in May, when a number of gully tops were taken from streets in Beeston, Bickerton, Bulkeley and Peckforton.

Cheshire East Councillor, Rod Menlove, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Environmental Services, said:

“This is the second incident of gully-top theft in as many months. This is a pointless, thoughtless crime which poses serious danger to drivers and pedestrians.

“In addition to the obvious dangers, the cost of replacing the gully tops will run into thousands of pounds, taking money away from vital highways services and using officer time.

“I urge local residents to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to Cheshire East Council or Cheshire Police.”
