DON’T WAIT TO DONATE

During the Summer, Cheshire East sees a decline in the amount of people going to donate blood or signing up to become new blood donors.

This year, with the World Cup, summer holidays and the warm weather to distract us, fewer people are expected to attend appointments or sign up to donate.

The demand on blood stocks means supplies needs to be plentiful all year round, so the summer slump in Cheshire East needs to be avoided.

Councillor Andrew Knowles, Cabinet member with responsibility for health and wellbeing went along to donate at Poynton Civic Hall last Friday (June 4). He said: “I’ve been a donor before and felt it was time to come again.

“It’s only an hour of my time and blood is continually needed all year round, so I feel that coming to do this is extremely worthwhile. You never know who or when someone may need it.”

Councillor Derek Bebbington said: “I think those who decide to become new and regular donors are playing a vital part in maintaining blood stocks in our area.

“If you’re under 65, fit and healthy then you’re an ideal candidate so why not see if you’re eligible?”

Hospitals in the North West use 5,000 units of blood a month, but only 4% of the eligible population are donors.

Anyone who wants to get involved and donate should contact the Donor Line on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk
