Family Fun Day To Celebrate Launch Of Community Project Play Area

A new £5,000 children’s play area is to be unveiled at a landmark Cheshire East community project.

The official opening takes place at the large square of open space at the back of Derrington Avenue, Hammond Street, Walthall Street and Alton Street, in Crewe, on April 11.

The neighbourhood play area includes a miniature balance course with wobble boards, striding stilts, log walk and parallel ropes – as well as brightly painted mushroom seats.

Cheshire East Mayor Councillor Margaret Simon will officially launch the grand opening party, held between 1pm and 3pm, which will include play activities for youngsters.

The play area equipment was funded by the Criminal Justice Board.

The surrounding alley gating was erected in 2008 to combat anti-social behaviour and burglaries.

Councillor Andrew Knowles, Cabinet member with responsibility for health and wellbeing, said: “This official opening will be a great day for the community and the play area is something children and local people as a whole can really celebrate and make their own.

“Cheshire East is fully committed to providing imaginative, healthy, sociable and inclusive active spaces that communities can take ownership of and really use.”

Work on the playground followed Cheshire East Council’s consultation with local residents and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, to select the most suitable equipment. The play equipment was installed last month.

The Fourways gated community area was given its name by residents and their newly-formed constituent group as the site is gated at four points.

Cheshire East Council owns the land and worked in partnership with the community to develop the site to meet the needs of the community.

The Fourways residents’ group aims to make the open space a better place to live around by providing improvements to its appearance, facilities and community activities. It also aims to act as a voice for residents living around the open space.

Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council funded the alley gates as part of its Safer Community Partnership in 2008.
